When Your Future Seems Unsure

Often our dreams don't work out as we planned. But, maybe a different dream is waiting to be embraced. -When Your Future Seems Unsure

I ached to bring my daughter home from her orphanage halfway across the world. God had moved mountains on our behalf, but 2 ½ years was a long time. A long time to imagine. A long time to dream. Visions of deep conversations, giggles along girly adventures, and cuddles in the rocking chair filled the crevices of my heart.

But dreams have a way of working out differently than we envision.

I can imagine you have been there with me, grappling with the reality of an unmet dream. Desperately flinging its pieces into the air. Fueled by the fear that if you stop for even a moment, you’ve given up and the delicate form of your dream will shatter around you.

But what happens when that vision just isn’t reality? What if God is saying His vision is much different than yours? Are you willing to embrace the changing of your dreams?

We may not know what the future holds, but we can trust the author with our story's ending. When You are Given a Different Dream - incourage

  1. So beautifully said, Lori! Our story is very different than the one I’d imagined, but the relationship that has grown with the Lord . . . this was the story I needed, the one that was perfect for me. Blessings my friend and thank you so much for sharing this.

    1. Thank you so much, Deb! When in the moment, it is so difficult to see that there could be a different dream. Then we cling to our faith – our trust in a God who loves us and has a good plan for us, putting one foot in front of the other and embracing the change. Thanks for visiting, my friend!
      Hugs,
      Lori

  2. Major congratulations on being featured at (in)courage. Heading over to read the rest of your story!

    1. Thank you so much, Michele! I am so honored and thankful … especially since it has been a favorite place of mine since they first began years ago!
      Blessings and smiles,
      Lori

  3. Is this the moment when you’re famous and I jump up and down shouting, “I know her”? 🙂 Lori, I’m so pleased that you have a feature at (in)courage. I can’t wait to go there and read it but even without the details I know that God is writing your beautiful story every single day. I’m just so grateful that you are following His lead and being thankful for the journey. Sweet blessings to you, my friend!

    1. You are so cute! Thank you so much, Marva! You made my day! 🙂 I am so thankful God has put you in my path and given me the privilege of calling you friend!

  4. Oh Lori … what a profound and beautifully written message! I especially like —
“But dreams have a way of working out differently than we envision.” this and just the title alone carries great impact for me. Your opening story of waiting for the adoption of your “daughter” just made me want to reach through the screen and give you a hug … and then to continue over at (in) courage … (sigh) … how heart breaking, but your hopeful words spoken to a desperate younger you (and us) carry enormous truth and a powerful message! I wish that I might embrace change as fully as you have … unknown changes in my near future stir up that fear in me as well. Yet as you wrote, we can trust the Author of our story! I pray that as “the Author and Perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2) will bring us through better and closer to Him, as we fix our eyes on Jesus! May He strengthen you as cling to Him, not knowing “what the future holds” (as I) but trusting the One who holds our future. Oh, Lori …amen! and amen!
Such a testimony and encouraging message you’ve shared! Thank you!~Peggy

    1. Thank you, sweet Peggy, for your wonderful comments! I am praying for you. I know this time of transition will take much trust to embrace a new dream … a new life. I am praying against fear. That every spirit of fear be cast out and in its place a spirit of courage and peace live abundantly. I am with you in heart and prayer, my friend! You’ve got this!
      Hugs,
      Lori

  5. Dearest Lori, I cannot imagine what it must have felt like to wait to bring your daughter home, but I know what it’s like to grapple with the reality of an unmet dream … especially when you feel like it’s a dream the Lord has placed on your heart. Thank you for this beautiful encouragement today. <3

    1. Hi Lauren,
Thank you for your kind words, Lauren! I am so thankful you were encouraged by these words. And I am praying for you as you grapple with a different dream.
      Hugs,
      Lori

  6. It is true that God’s plans are so much better than our own, even when we work out all of the logistics. We are limited in our understanding and do not know the future.

I love this post and the fact that you waited for God to bring you your little girl. God has gifted you to write …

    1. Thank you, Tammy, for your very kind words. They were such encouragement to me today!
      Blessings and smiles,
      Lori

  7. Yes. Thank you for this testimony. I find myself smack-dab in the middle of “life not like I expected it” right now, and it’s hard to surrender my dreams and relinquish control. Yet I know His plan will be more beautiful than mine…

    1. Hi Ashley,
I am praying for that dream of yours. For comfort as you relinquish it and embrace the new dream designed by Him. I am believing with you in the incredible beauty of that new dream!
      Hugs,
      Lori
