9 Things Vulnerability Says About Your Worth

“I need help.”

3 very hard words to say.

Somehow they feel weak. As if we are admitting to the fact that we can’t handle what life has dished out. Or that we’ve jumped into too much, made poor decisions, did it the wrong way, or made a mistake.

3 words that trigger those feelings of “not enough” and a reminder that somehow I’m not worthy.

But it’s a lie. A lie that sends into loneliness, overwhelm, and desperation. Into a vicious cycle of

striving → falling short → shame → striving more → falling short → more shame

Truth says something different about vulnerability:

We were never created to do life without help, so don’t be afraid to ask.

This week, I am sharing a post from my friend, Kia Stephens of The Father Swap, wrote a powerful piece on vulnerability. It spoke to the heart of #ChosenandWorthy because when we don’t know who we are or Whose we are, we are afraid to be vulnerable. Kia convicted me again and again as she shared hope in this post titled, 3 Ways Being Vulnerable May Change Your Life.

“Don’t show your weakness.

Never let them see you sweat.

Have no fear.

Quite honestly, I tried, but my trying wasn’t enough to maintain a facade of perfection.  And as I stood in the center of life, wobbling on a tightrope, and somehow managing to keep all my balls in the air I realized I couldn’t do it anymore.

“We need to get some counseling,” I remember saying to my husband.  Even as I said it fear gnawed at me.  “Kia, if you get counseling what will people think?” I thought but never said out loud.

But there is something about desperation that nullifies the fear of people’s opinions.  I didn’t care anymore about perfection or the appearance of it.  I needed help, so I asked for it.” -Kia Stephens

Do your thoughts easily stray down a self-defeating path where every wrong turn, whether big or small, leaves a shame filled mark on your heart? Yes, you are "More Than a Victim"! It can be all too tempting to keep "picking at" the trauma from our past. Even if our history is littered with injuries from others or unavoidable circumstances, it is our choice to continue living with a "wounded" mentality. - Gretchen Fleming for Lori Schumaker and the #ChosenandWorthy Series    To the Girl Who Doesn't Know She is Worthy - In the reflection of whose mirror do you determine your worth? Hi Lori,

There is a lot of truth here! I went a little Pinterest crazy with all of your spot on quotes. Thanks for featuring me on your blog today. It is truly an honor. Be blessed my friend! – Kia

    1. I loved featuring you, Kia! I always love your blog and this post simply nailed it and resonated with my heart for women to know they are #ChosenandWorthy! Thank you!!♥

  2. Funny thing.
I sat in a committee meeting last night and did the very thing you have written about.
New Flash! I can’t do everything. I need help.
It’s wonderful to put ourselves in that humble position, and the truth is that often no one is really surprised at our neediness! And it’s wonderful when people who have been on the fringes are drawn into the center by the truth that there is a place for them — beside me.
    Blessings, Lori!

    1. I love how God often lines up the messages we hear in perfect timing – as if they were an affirmation or little reminder in case we want to stray from what we knew the evening before 🙂 Glad this resonated, Michele!
      Blessings and smiles,
      Lori

  3. Hi Lori!

Love the inspirational quotes and graphics. They all ring true, but the one that really spoke to me was “Our works are not equal to our worthiness.” I had to read that one twice!

    Been missing you. 🙂

    Love,

Thank you for the beautiful words and graphics. I needed that this Monday morning.

    1. Hi Maree, I’m so glad these served as an encouragement to you!

  5. Well, Lori, you have given me a whole week of beautiful tweetable quotes! I love every single one! Thank you!

  6. The images are so beautiful, Lori, and the words are poignant and deep. Such a powerful combination that brings the message of hope right into our hearts. As I read your words it brought to mind some I had read recently in a book by Jerry Bridges called, Trusting God. He says, “God had brought a ‘crooked’ event into my life, and I became acutely aware that only He could straighten it.” He goes on to highlight how trusting God even when the crooked paths are in front of us shows us how worthy and valuable we are to the Almighty Father who loves us in all our spaces.

    Blessings!!!
    Dawn

    1. Hi Dawn,
I love that quote! So true! Thanks, friend, for sharing it! And for being here ♥

  7. Sigh. It is often so hard to ask for help. But yes, we definitely need to do it! None of us were meant to go through life alone, and part of that means that we need to be vulnerable to each other about our needs that we can’t meet on our own. Thanks for sharing this, Lori.

    1. Thanks, Lisa ♥ Alone would get pretty awful, wouldn’t it? Being vulnerable leaves us open to hurt, but alone would eventually hurt worse. Love your visits, friend!

Amazing, Lori – totally the best yet! So much truth and beautiful to look at (how many times did i tweet? let me count the ways… (:) sue

    1. You are so sweet, Sue♥ So glad it resonated with you!
      Hugs,
      Lori

  9. Lori- I love all your graphics! The first graphic is my favorite. I don’t ask for help, so God has put situations in my life recently which had me relinquishing my pride.
Enjoy your break! I hope you can find rest and refreshment!

    1. Praying you open those fingers on that grip and keep relinquishing, my friend! ♥ Love and hugs, Lori

  10. It’s really hard for me to ask for help. Thank you for this beautiful encouragement in words and graphics, Lori. This especially comforts my heart – “Our worth is not in how much we can do, but in the fact that we were created with a love that does more than we can ever imagine.” I needed that reminder today. In fact, I need it every day! Have a refreshing break! Love and hugs to you!

    1. These graphics were so fun to make! I’m so thrilled they encouraged so many! I’m always humbled to know that God uses my heart to give hope. Love you much, Lori

  11. Such a pretty post today filled with such great graphics and quotes. Thanks for hosting!

    1. Thank you, Sherry! I thoroughly enjoyed making them!

  12. Loving all these life lessons here. Inspiring as always, Lori.

    1. Thanks so much, Ruth! You are an encouragement!

  13. It’s amazing how paradoxical situations teach us the most. When we don’t want to ask for help because we feel weak, we are the most empowered by asking for it. Thanks for the reminder!

    1. Exactly! You said it so perfectly, Laura! We truly are empowered through the humbling ourselves of vulnerability! Thanks so much for visiting!

  14. debwilson2 says:

Lori, great post. I like the thought that asking for help is letting that person be and use the gifts God gave them.

    1. Thanks, Deb ♥ I heard that once not too very long ago and it has stuck with me. I still struggle with asking for help and often wait tooooooooo long to do it, but I know it is true and eventually humble myself!! 🙂

  15. It feels like you just served up a triple espresso shot of truth straight to my soul this morning Lori, and I so needed it!! Hugs:)

    1. Yes! Triple espresso is good!♥ Thankful I could encourage you, my friend!
